Art Terminology:
Expressionism - An art movement of the early 20th century in which traditional adherence to realism and proportion was replaced by the artist's emotional connection to the subject. These paintings are often abstract, the subject matter distorted in color and form to emphasize and express the intense emotion of the artist.

Fine Art - An art form created primarily as an aesthetic expression to be enjoyed for its own sake. The viewer must be prepared to search for the intent of the artist as the all-important first step toward communication and active participation.

Tod Haskin Frederick's
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tod Haskin Frederick's studied Commercial Art, Art Education and Fine Art at The Layton School of Art in Milwaukee as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After college he served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969. Tod is a painter who now specializes in depicting the African American cultural experience in American history.

In the past much of it has been associated with the significant military contributions made by African Americans. He has a number of well received works related to United States Colored Troops in his portfolio. These works represent his exploration, through his art, of the spirit and soul, contributions, dignity and persistent struggle demonstrated by the African American race in our country.

Hulis Mavruk
Hulis Mavruk was born in Southern Turkey on July 4, 1952. A self-taught artist, Mavruk has been painting professionally since the age of 6, providing him with the means to continually refine his technique. In Turkey, he had a gallery and portrait studio on Incirlik Air Force Base, where U.S. Air Force officers actually paid him to do their portraits.

Mavruk believes that his work can inspire young African Americans to take pride in their heritage and try to emulate their leaders.
